I don't believe that story for a second.

Sounds like something he saw in a movie and adapted it into his biography.

    Garys shirt....

    Gary....

    I watch the Booey-Hein show.
22 minutes of show....too much filler!
    -horrendous scripted corny banter
    -beeped out cursing....so edgy!
-WUS like commentary inserted to explain things like why 2 fats guys are sweaty.

And what does Gary do today to get guests?
    Nothing.
Only publicists that contact him directly comes on the show. Minimal work, minimal effort. 3 days a week/5 hours/104 days a year.

i think Gary is set up to fail. Not many people want to be on the show anymore, the ones that do are the same ones we are sick of hearing over and over. The other problem is Howard's schedule. Three day workweek was bad enough, now down to two some weeks due to vacations and AGT. Anyone promoting anything is going to take the big morning shows from the start. Then Gary has to try and squeeze them in between Eric the Actor phone ins and endless bits about the Block Party. Not not a lot of time left for any "real" guests.
    Anything else Robin?
