Generally speaking, the Mac is much safer than PCs, although they are becoming more prolific, so hackers are starting to target them a little more. It's also dependent on what you've got; I have an old G5, the last pre-Intel model, and it's out-of-date in many respects, but it's also different hardware and stuff, so it's an incredibly low target value for miscreants. I've surfed the vilest porn and warez and whatnot with impunity for many years now. The newer Intel models are a little more vulnerable, and especially if you run Windows alongside OSX. In short, the Macs from the last 7 years or so aren't bullet-proof, but they're MUCH safer than PCs....

What do you mean by "pull the trigger" ? Buy a Mac? I haven't run into any pRon sites that aren't Mac compatible in a long time. If you're into heavy gaming that's not a Mac forte, but for most general stuff, they are SO much less hassle and more dependable. I've always compared it to motorcycles; the Jap bikes aren't as "cool" as Harleys and Brit bikes, but if you give them any reasonable care at all, you can just get on and ride. No tinkering and tuning and tweaking....

Pulll the trigger as in buy one. I don't want to spend that kind of cash and get hit with viruses. I have talked with salespeople that say that whil a mac is not likely to get one, it is not immune. I just don't want to have to change my online experience if I buy one.

That's a pretty honest statement, from my experience. I have a hunch that you will like it (Mac). I also use Firefox on my stuff and a few of their Plug-Ins (free) that help filter out pop-ups, JavaScripts, etc.
