Best alternative song? 90s? For me it's:

“Don't question Authority. They don't know shit either.”

You do your scary great pictures because you're a professional. I'll take my stupid...automatic camera...take pictures and we'll see if people can tell the difference. - HS, 2-1-02

that's a good one, but it has a burn out, dated factor the other doesn't (yet)

the other songs by Mother Love Bone and Jeff Buckley are lack ballads. I think I'll pass on the Air Supply for now

I would say "Bleach" is a true alternative album, not so much Nevermind and In Utero. For all you kids out there, alternative was coined in the 80's as a reference to New Wave bands (basically the stuff on 1st Wave on Sirius). They weren't getting mainstream radio airplay, and were primarily on college radio or very weak signal stations in obscure markets (there was a legendary one in Seattle that broke most of those grunge bands, can't remember the call letters). Hence they were the "alternative" to regular radio. Bands like REM, Echo and The Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, etc. were the original alternative groups (as well as a lot of other British bands I can't remember).

In the 90's, alternative music became much harder and darker coupled with insane distortion effect, with bands like The Meatpuppets, The Pixies and The Screaming Trees having paved the way for that sound. For my money, the best 90's alternative song was by a band that Howard liked and had perform on THSS, Hum and Stars:
