Opinions change over time as technology and culture advances. What is right and wrong now will be very different in the future. Behaviors that you engage in now will quite possibly be considered racist, sexist, ignorant, or selfish by future generations.

The civil war set the precedent of what states rights would ultimately be in this country. Whether the irreconcilable difference is about slavery, taxation, military activity, or ingredients allowed in ice cream, states know that there is a heavy price to be paid for secession. We are in this thing together and what used to be a more shared power became a very centralized government. This has led to a malaise of the population which means low voter turnout. Less than a majority of our population even bothers to vote. This allows corruption and waste to reign. What is right about senators moving their whole families to DC to become lobby groups who enrich themselves by ensuring that their senator is bought for whatever cause they are representing at the time. There will be a change someday, but it probably won't be brought about by states seceding again - they have been pussified by the civil war and continuously sucking on the tit of the central government.
