What is the best brand of external hard drive? (srs) (IT nerds GTFIH)

I've bought 3 LaCie D2 quadra hard drives and two of them have shit the bed already.
The last one I didn't have backed up so I lost a ton of important stuff. I did a disk utility
repair and it says the it is fine but it won't show up on my Mac. I called LaCie
support and it says that there's nothing that can be done fuckin thing sucks

Anyway, I'm going to buy another one to back up what I have on the 3rd LaCie. Anyone
know a reliable brand? The other lasted about 2 years each.

You cant go wrong with Western Digital.. WD has been around since the 70s and has been in the hard drive business since then. But I am surprised you've had so many failures with your LACie cuz my LaCie Rugged has been bulletproof..

If the stuff that you lost is that important, try this place. They have a really high success rate at recovering data. We had a hard drive go bad and thought we lost a boat load of client data and they recovered 98% of our files.

Seagate makes many different levels of drives. the cheapest ones they sell are not made by them: a few years ago Seagate bought Maxtor. Maxtor made all the bargain basement drives that stores like CompUSA sold as their home in house brand, usually as loss-leaders. you don't get any bargains when you buy a cheap Seagate because you're basically buying a Maxtor throw-away drive. Seagate's mid-range to top of the line drives are great and last for 3-5 years on average, but you get what you pay for.

Western Digital has two grades of drives: shit and great with no in between. Generally they achieve stability by writing slower so your actual throughput is mediocre but reliable. Seagate's top end are screamers; you want them for databases and video media server arrays.

The big issue is a decision the remaining drive manufacturers reached about 4 years ago: they decided not to engage in price wars anymore. for example, Seagate refuses to discount their better drives now. They also decided they will not offer 5 year warranties anymore. i think 2 or 3 yrs is the most now. This allows them to have a higher defective ratio.

All this works out to: you used to be able to shop for discounted, incredibly good quality drives. You can't do that anymore: if you want really good drives, you have to pay retail for them now.

The alternative is to get middle-of-the road drives and subscribe to a good online backup company (thus, NOT carbonite) like Mozy or Backblaze.

Mozy is owned by EMC, and you don't get better network storage than EMC (its the choice of the Fortune 100) but it costs. Backblaze is more affordable and tries harder IMHO. The test of an online storage service is not how fast or how much you can backup, but how fast you can recover. I tested Mozy, Backblaze, and Carbonite with the same system and data over the same connection.

All three backed up my 3TB in about a week, but when i wiped the drives and then tried to recover, there were big differences. Mozy and Backblaze both restored 1TB in 6 days running 24x7. had I let Carbonite continue they would probably still be trying to restore my data 2 years later.

Mozy would normally be my choice, because EMC gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling that my data is going to be there forever if i want it to. Backblaze is a startup company with similar performance stats to Mozy, and they cost far less annually to archive unlimited volumes of data because you pay per PC backed up, not per how much data you store.

Currently I use Backblaze.
