Any cigar smokers here? (SRS. No homo)

I have zero knowledge of what is or isn't a good cigar. I'm in the middle of a project and I will be needing some cigar bands and or boxes.

Could you possibly share with me a brand you prefer or know that is popular or high quality? I'm guessing Swisher Sweets are on the low end.

    Thanks!

I like Avo Xos. Avo, like Davidoff is considered a premium (at least by price) Dominican Republic brand. it is an extremely mild smoke; Avo generally has pepper overtones which I like. Women seem to like Davidoff a lot (probably because it is so mild and somewhat coffee & cream-like) and they have a big business selling customized packaging for weddings, anniversaries, etc.

There are the classic brand names that most people recognize: Cohiba, Arturo Fuente, Padron, Montecristo, Romeo Y Julieta, Punch, H Upmann, Bolivar, etc. because they were originally from the factories in Cuba before the embargo. Many are made from the same parent company, General Cigar. After the embargo they switched production to DR, Nicaragua, and anyplace else that has a big tobacco crop and cheap labor.

I get the cheapest cigars I can find to keep just in case I get a dead body at work. The stinkier and crappy tasting the better. That's probably not what you are looking for though......

the quality of cubans dropped through the floor when the demand on wall st went crazy. they overproduced and sucked the crops dry. they use inferior products now in order to make volume and capitalize on being "from cuba". i find them very harsh now and a waste of money and time. DR and to a lesser extend Nicaragua are producing far superior smokes now, while being far cheaper than cubans. if you go out of the US, cubans are as cheap as the DRs are within the US...

I'm going to be collecting some cigar bands and I wanted to make sure I wasn't outting cheap bands on something that is supposed to be high end.

This info will help immensely. Thank you very much.

Add Partagas to this list and you're basically good.

burn any cigar and let the stub get wet. the smell will wipe out anything else, and make you retch. the other way is to remove the outer wrapper leaf (where all the fermented sugars and flavors are) burn the ropey filler by itself. smells like a cesspool.

yes i figured i missed a few. there are so many brand names now, and most are shit: the artwork on their labels is better than the smoke.

Much of it is personal preference ... I tend to prefer a very mild cigar, like the Macanudo Maduro ... I've found that its best to join a cigar club where they send you a few different cigars every month.. From that you should be able to decide what suits your taste best

... I use this place to order my supplies

I'm actually not looking to start smoking them. I'm going to be attempting an advanced pen design that results in something that looks exactly like a cigar.

I'll be hand carving the ash end, and all the pen components will be hidden. If you placed it on a table in an ashtray there would be no way to tell it wasn't an actual cigar.

I'm thinking of buying some empty cigar boxes and hand making some flocked or velvet lined inserts to hold the pen inside.

I didn't want to go thru all the work to only add a crappy label to one.

I need to buy a special chuck for my lathe first, but then I'll be off to the races.
