I spent 2 weeks backpacking/canoeing in pristine Canadian wilderness once....it was a watershed moment. I'm thinking maybe you mean like the hepcat bumming around hostel type thing, though. I've never had the confidence to do something like that, though I'd have loved to. And frankly these days, I'm not too comfortable outside the US, except maybe Canada and parts of Europe. I'm just not into being kidnapped and tortured/raped/murdered, but then again I'm kind of a fuddy-duddy like that....

I back packed across a couple of islands in my youth. I wouldn't do it now. I like plumbing and fresh linens.
