havent read this thread yet, but i imagine you are part of the crew. is the crew employed by the production company & do you work with pretty much the same crew each project or are you out of work after each movie wraps like actors? how does that work? do you have off times between projects or they immediately shift you to another set?
do you travel to locations or do they hire locals for your job?

That article sounds like just about every movie you work on. We call it kindergarten with money. The politics and crazy shit the "talent" pull is mindblowing. Directors and producers aren't much better. I've quit a few shows over the director being such a fucking maniac and I can't watch certain celebrities in any movie they do simply because they were so horrible to work with and are miserable entitled fucks.

Don't know anything about Cruise, Travolta.. never worked with them.. but where there's smoke there's generally fire.

Ya.. part of the crew on-set.. the crew are union members who are employed by the "production company" specifically set up to make every movie. Some of the crew are their own "companies" and get paid as such, other are temporary employees of the production company. Everyone paid dues to their specific unions off their checks regardless. Yes, you generally hook up with a "team" you get along with and go from show to show with them.. and then sometimes you work with complete strangers. You do have time off sometimes or you can wrap on Friday and start a new show on Monday. They do both, on location they hire locals for small jobs but the keys and most of the "core" crew generally get shipped on location.. where ever it is. Frankly living in hotels sucks, rather go home every night.

I fell into it through a friend in the 80's.. never went to school. We diss all the film-school dweebs who show up and are "book smart" but get eaten alive on set because they don't teach the politics, pecking orders, and weird shit that one has to deal with... or prepare the students for the controlled-chaos that a movie set really is. They usually get body-slammed on their first few shows hard.

I lived in LA for a decade then moved elsewhere.. hated LA.. but miss a few things.. summer concerts at the Greek theater, the margaritas at El Coyote's, Zuma 8, Humbolt weed.. real Mexican food.. But more movies are made elsewhere than in LA. It's because LA looks like... well.. LA. And most movies don't take place where there are palm trees everywhere and sets can be built on any sound stage.. or in any old warehouse.

If anyone is interested here's a great "behind-the-scenes" video blog Peter Jackson made during the shooting of the Hobbit.. gives you an idea of the scale of the shit that needs to happen to make a feature film.

Work is being done everywhere.. It depends on what the movie is about, (where it takes place,) and the tax incentives each state/province/country gives the production company to shoot in their "hood." The tax incentives programs are very competitive.. so sometimes it's cheaper to shoot in Georgia or North Carolina than in LA/Cali.

AD.. Assistant Director.. essentially one of the "project managers" in corporate-speak. Except most of the crew are unemployable in the real world (just look at Howard's crew for an example.. hehehe) .. and the talent are bat-shit crazy so you have to worry about shit like filling Winnies water-tanks with 40 gallons of Evian water because normal fucking water isn't good enough!

So are you tied to one or more Directors doing that, or is it a float around freelance kind of thing? I'm just curious because I've done PA and photo asst work in fashion stills, rubbed elbows with a few motion picture and video grunts in that capacity. Interesting work, and it was always cool to go get special rental equipment from the big studios in Dallas... I worked with some of the coolest people I've ever met, and some of the biggest douchebags, too. (nobody famous) I'm too old and tired for it anymore, but it beats the fuck out of sitting in a cubicle.

BTW, if "Winnie" is Wynona Ryder, I'd drink her bath water....

Is it true what they say about Matt Damon? That he's like the nicest movie star who ever lived? I've heard he has no ego at all on set and actually brings coffee to the extras.

What's the longest amount of time you've spent on set shooting a scene that was only on screen for a few moments? I've read where some special effects take days to organize and shoot but maybe will last 3 seconds visually.

I'm almost positive that's a "no". I say this because I've been on location crews with a friggin' retail catalog fashion crew and we got our own rooms...so I can only guess movie crews get a much bigger budget.
