I don't think it was scripted but this Kearns guy was definitely a guest (not just a charity winner) and they knew his history with gay Hollywood (this is the HSS), they just used the ruse that that he was just some do-gooder that won a chance to sit in so they wouldn't be liable for anything this guy might say...and the whole deal with Howard hitting the button was him pretending he didn't know what was coming...all planned out and safe, as usual.
