He referenced the lyric "we haven't had that spirit here since 1969" as a nod to Anton La Vey, who wrote the Satanic Bible, and at the time, it's last publishing was in 1969. He also believed La Vey's shadow was in the window on the album cover, and that the lyric "they stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast" was referencing the war between God and Satan.

Of course, Don Henley's take on the song is that it's about the trappings of fame, and the personal addictions that come with it, and the "steely knives" is a nod to Steely Dan, who mentioned the Eagles in one of their songs.

    Dumb lyrics? Hardly think so.

The inside sleeve of the album has a guy hanging over the upstairs railing (in the middle window opening) that mildly resembles Anton Lavey... That's where all that nonsense began ... The song itself is about the drugs & other excesses of life during the 70's

In fact I find this one to be one of the least intolerable of all their intolerable, played-out, countrified shit.

As opposed to most other bands who write & record music so that people can rush out & hate their songs... Makes complete sense, now.

Glen Fry & Don Henley wrote the vast majority of their popular songs... Felders biggest claim to fame was writing the music for Hotel California

I put the Eagles in the same category as Bob Seger, Aerosmith and John Mellencamp... lots of hits, the radio loves them, and not completely devoid of actual talent... but WAAAAY overrated and most of their die-hard fans live in houses with wheels.

If you're still selling out arena's worldwide nearly 40 years after the release of your first album, its kind of hard to stick the "overrated" label on them.... Just think of all the huge acts that were insanely popular for a few years & then disappeared off the face of the planet within that time frame ... Just within the Eagles alone you've got 3 individuals who were extremely successful solo acts ..... When I saw the Eagles a few years back, there was nothing "trailer park" about the crowd that was there to see them... There was clearly an upper-class vibe in the air (where we were sitting, anyway...The upper levels may have been a different story) ..... I've been to a million shows with the Slayer, Danzig, & Metallica types where you could almost smell the failure & poverty on some of the fans... But, the Eagles show was almost like going to a Broadway play where patrons were allowed to smoke weed while they watched...

Other guy was right. It's still around, you just gotta look for it. There's also a lot of shit being made still.
