I cannot count the number of times he's shown me a profile on Facebook and said "that guy was arrested for five murders last night". Also lots of kids will brag to their friends "my father is in the mafia" and they'll use that in a major case.

The NYPD has its own gang task force that uses social media to profile suspects and assist with arrests. Many gang members use their nicknames on social media accounts and post photos and videos of themselves on line. Also once you find out a gang member's name you can see his online friends and it will always lead you to more gangsters. The NYPost had a great article about these tactics. It has helped significantly reduce violent crime in NYC.
