    South Africa cardinal says paedophilia not a crime

    JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A     South African cardinal who helped elect Pope Francis this week has told the BBC paedophilia is an illness and not a crime.

    Napier said he knew of at least two priests who became paedophiles after they were abused as children.

    "Now don't tell me that those people are criminally responsible like somebody who chooses to do something like that.

    I don't think you can really take the position and say that person deserves to be punished. He was himself damaged.    "

    I fail to understand how defining it as an 'illness' somehow absolves a person from responsibility for spreading it to others.

    It doesn't. See the bizarro-type logic being employed here? Why isn't that priest visiting pedophiles in prison and psychiatric hospitals? After all, wasn't that a part of St. Francis of Assisi's mission statement? Visiting those in prison?
