If you are going to use it for driving directions, get google maps. Apple maps or whatever comes with the phone is royally fucked up. For some reason they haven't bothered to fix it yet. It'll take you all the hell over the place.

I take it this is your first smart phone. get Yelp and Urbanspoon. They'll help you find restaurants and shopping. Get Fandango. You can always look up what's on at the movies. I have USA today. You can waste time reading the news while everyone else has their nose stuck in their phone. Tune In Radio will allow you to listen to radio stations all over the country. Red Cross has a cool app that will warn you of upcoming bad weather if that is an issue where you live. I think it's called "tornado."
There are several apps that you can get flight information on. I use American mostly so I just have theirs but there are several that list all the airlines. There are some good comparative shopping apps. You scan the bar code of something you want to buy and the app finds if it is for sale cheaper somewhere else. I have one that tells me where the cheapest gas is in the area. Can't remember the name of it.
