See thats the thing. Government has no business whatsoever in marriage. If a man wants to marry a man, so what?

a large majority of republicans disagree

in fact, this issue, along with abortion and Mexicans are their number 1,2 and 3 issues by far.

Just for the record, I live in Ohio and am a Republican. I've always hated Portman and his gay son has been common knowledge for awhile, I'm guessing the press gave him a pass like with Cheney's daughter?

I love how someone can say they support LGBT civil rights...but not marriage.

You keep leaving out the Q in LGBT. That's a bigoted point of view. It's like you are ashamed of the people who identify themselves as 'queer'. Shame, shame. Ellen is very disappointed in your bigoted point of view.

    Q stands for "questioning".

I think they should embrace a broader spectrum of human emotion by including "seriously considering" and "only on weekends with a good whiskey buzz".

The acronym would then be "LGBTQSCOOWWAGWB". It still looks like something to eat made with Bacon, lettuce and tomato but now in a word for saying it from Somilia.

Because marriage is a privilege, not a civil right. Gays have no more right to marry than biological siblings, minors, or fathers-daughters.

He's known since 2011 and waits until after the past election in November to declare his support for his son.

    Douchebag.

maybe he just doesn't want to bring his kid into the political arena...

even if he did, why are you surprised when you see a politician acting like a politician?

If your intention is that 'this isn't a big deal (anymore),' with the "anymore" implied, I get it but that's not how your post(s) are reading.

I've had some time to think about this particular situation since the news broke yesterday (or was it the day before?) and, well...

When a child comes out to his or her parent(s), it's sort of like the parent is coming out too. Their first reaction or the way they handle it, whether it's how they discuss it (if at all) among their friends and colleagues is sometimes awkward and clunky and I guess at the end of the day, so long as they're supportive of their child, that's the most important thing, but I do question a person who is in a position of leadership and seemingly waits until a calculated, "safe" moment to "come out" with the news.

He's known since 2011 and was supposedly on Romney's short list for VP and now, more than 5 months after the election and months before any election season in sight, it seems like he chose a safe time to break the news to his party and the country.

It's a little disappointing but in a way, he's kind of a pioneer so I'll cut him a little slack.

He's got an uphill battle ahead with his party, though. I don't envy him that.
