Women who survived flurry of LAPD bullets have yet to get truck


LAPD Chief Charlie Beck pledged to provide a truck to Margie Carranza, 47, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, 71, who were delivering newspapers when officers mistook their truck for Dorner's.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck hasn't come through on a promise to provide a new truck for two women injured by officers in pursuit of fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner, an attorney for the women said Monday.

Beck pledged to provide the truck to Margie Carranza, 47, and her mother, Emma Hernandez, 71, who were delivering newspapers in Torrance last month when LAPD officers riddled their blue Toyota Tacoma with bullets. Dorner was believed to be driving a gray Nissan Titan.
Hernandez was shot twice in the back, and Carranza was injured by broken glass.

Beck called the shooting "a tragic misinterpretation" by officers working under "incredible tension" hours after Dorner allegedly shot police officers. He promised to provide a truck from a donor regardless of potential litigation by the women.
But Glen Jonas, the women's attorney, said they are still without a truck.

"After they shot my clients ... this broken promise of a truck donation and the nonsense that followed is a slap in the face," he said.
Jonas said the women were first offered a used truck, then a non-four-wheel-drive Ford to replace their four-wheel-drive Toyota. The women also had to agree not to sell it for a year. His clients agreed to that truck, he said.

But then the dealership and LAPD officials said the truck would be considered a prize for tax purposes, Jonas said. "Essentially, they'd have to pay taxes like they won it on a game show."...

Leave it to the LAPD to fuck it all up again. The taxes would of been close to ten grand from what I heard. Might as well of asked the woman and her mother to pay for the bullets that shot up their truck as well.

They knew the national spotlight was gonna stay on them until this was resolved....They knew that taking care of these broads expeditiously would have helped their cause when the two eventually sue the city.. And yet they still fumbled the ball.... It just defies all logic... Even a retard knows how to do some things right..But, the same cant be said about the clowns running the city of L.A.

I'm surprised they just didn't offer up a seized truck or car of choice from their holdings. A little good will could have helped the LAPD. If i were in a similar situation and the city made due on their pledge I probably wouldn't be as aggressive in my lawsuit against them.

NBC 4 in LA reports that 71-year-old Emma Hernandez and her daughter, who had been delivering newspapers when eight police officers opened fire on them out of the blue, no longer want the new truck after being told they'd need to pose for a photo op and pay income tax on it. The truck was valued at $32,560.

According to [the women's lawyer, Glen] Jonas, LAPD and Galpin Ford wanted his clients to pose for a photo opportunity and pay income tax on the truck. The women no longer want the truck after they were told they needed to fill out a 1099 form for the donation, Jonas said Monday.
