well, they needed to, but they only realized it after it was too late. a isolated island that foreigners couldn't reach was a safe place. continental europe and asia was not. lots of wars and necessity to advance in order to beat their enemies. by the time those "enemies" reached the bahamas, it was too late for the poor arawaks.
