Never. Ireland either, they will actually turn them away in a good pub. They get paid well and are considered a trade so they think the notion of enticing them to do a good job the next time you might be in is insulting - a good barman worth his salt will be good all the time, to everyone.
This - tea/coffee and sandwiches or biscuits early on, a beer and pizza or something later in the day. It's just the way.
In Japan if you tip them it is considered an insult.
You would think in the USA when you spend 100 bucks on 10 bucks worth of food they could pay the wait staff. It is tiresome to tip so I dont go out to eat often. I am not cheap, I just feel I am getting ripped off when I buy food at a restaurant.
