most of the waiters here are illegal aliens (irish, i think). if the owners paid them min wage they would have to report it, and pay FICA, etc. which would get the owners arrested and the waiters deported. Ireland cannot support the dramatic influx of repatriated unskilled workers this would involve. Tips keep Ireland from defaulting; you want Ireland to default?

I'm with you on this one...Not that I'm a tight wad but I never got the tip thing here... In the UK you go to a pub to drink and not to worry if you tipped enough

Never. Ireland either, they will actually turn them away in a good pub. They get paid well and are considered a trade so they think the notion of enticing them to do a good job the next time you might be in is insulting - a good barman worth his salt will be good all the time, to everyone.

Just a bit off topic but kinda the same thing... When people come to my home to do work I always offer something to drink or eat... As a house painter here I go to many homes and It rarely happens

In Japan if you tip them it is considered an insult.

You would think in the USA when you spend 100 bucks on 10 bucks worth of food they could pay the wait staff. It is tiresome to tip so I dont go out to eat often. I am not cheap, I just feel I am getting ripped off when I buy food at a restaurant.

I think it's just polite... In a way they are a guest in ya home... In fact as soon as someone come's in my home the first thing I offer is a drink... tea, coffee, water... etc.. But I do find that a lot of people don't do that
