Thanks for posting this, Ryan.

It's clear Spade's a long-time fan who's also disappointed with how sad things have gotten. Artie told a story about how before he was on the Stern show Spade would text him during Robin's news whenever Fred played the chicken sound during some kind of Spanish/Mexican story. That always cracked Spade up, and he knew Artie was a big fan too.

I don't think Spade's texting anybody anything about the Stern show these days.

Every once in a while when reflecting on the former show glory compared to where it's at now, I think about how popular he used to be with celebs back in the day. I got the distinct impression that there were a lot of actors and actresses sitting in make-up chairs in the early morning listening to him...........................not to mention all the celebs still out partying.

But that all seems long gone now.

Ironically, I think he'd be a lot more "in" with Hollywood now if he hadn't gone so Hollywood.

I couldn't stand the Spade interview, switched over to the Stern Show Shuffle on 101. For some reason, I wanted to bash the radio in when I saw that Spade was on. Apparently, Gary has lost all ability to book a relevant guest. Complete shit.

I love how Howard desperately wanted Spade to admit he was angry with Farley for dying. He doesn't care about an organic interview anymore. He wants to put words in his guest's mouths.

Spade made the interview tolerable especially with all his jabs at Howard and how the show has become boring and irrelevant.

What incentive do any relevant guest have on doing the stern show now?He only works 3 days a week. His show only reaches a fraction of the Sirius audience. He is on too fucking early for the Hollywood types. His questioning sucks most of the time. The Days of Howard having a bully pulpit that reached 10% of the population of the country are long gone.

So you get Spade, The Latest Whore housewife who is besties with the Horse, and 3 old farts cashing in on their collective laurels(Robin, Howard, and Fred). So learn it live it love it.

Even though I didn’t catch on to the Stern craze till the mid-’90s, I still consider myself a hard-core fan. I was wrapping up my run on Saturday Night Live and usually slept in every day, so I missed his show. But I knew he was a big deal. I had heard people repeating bits he did, and they always made me laugh. He came in one day to meet with Lorne Michaels, and everyone was freaking out. That was the first time I met him. Way taller than I thought (who isn’t?) and quieter. And nice to everyone. Which still shocks me.


Stern, 52, was the first guy to make it seem cool to be a loser. To a lot of us who stay at home in a dark room eating Hot Pockets, he seemed like a buddy. He would make fun of good-looking famous people and make girls show their boobs. What’s not to like about that? I was sold.


After 10 years, he can still make me laugh and get me jealous when he thinks of something so fast that I don’t see it coming. He’s at his best when he’s complaining—the FCC, George W. Bush, whatever. Being a guest on his show, I get to hear the good and bad of my so-called life and career. Let me tell you, it’s a lot easier having Katie Couric tell me I look cute (as she did one day) than volunteering to go in and have Howard dissect every loser aspect of me that I would rather keep hidden. If I didn’t believe he thought I was funny, I’d never go on. He doesn’t do a lot of “Your movie’s great.”


He does a lot of “You’re not good-looking. Girls date you only because you’re on TV. Most of your movies suck. You probably killed Chris Farley. You’re jealous of Sandler. I have a caller who says he hates you and another who thinks you’re gay.” Not exactly James Lipton. But because he makes me laugh, it’s a lot (a little) easier to take.


The other day, I was pulling into the parking garage at my gym, listening to Stern. I did what I usually do if Stern is on a roll: I parked right before going underground so it wouldn’t cut out. I turned to my right, and some guy in a Subaru was parked next to me laughing. I rolled down the window and asked, “Stern?”, and he nodded. Two more fans out of millions having another laugh with the King of All Media. Or at least the Subaru.

I'm 38 minutes through--so far my only complaints are Howard's bad habit of cutting guests off right before they're about to make a decent point or finish a story. He must have ADHD. Beyond that, Howard also sounds about as prepared for the interview as Custer was at the Alamo.

Other than that, it sounds fine by me.

That sums it up perfectly.

And the words he's looking to put in the guests' mouths are always more telling about him than the guest.

He plays a shrink who diagnoses people, even though he's really describing his own symptoms, and then spends the rest of the interview to try to get the guest to cop to them.

And there's a really strange persistence to it; a stubborn desperation, as if deep down Howard senses that if he's wrong about the guest, then that must mean he's just projecting.

It's like he needs to make it true even if it's not.

I thought it was interesting when David was talking about getting advice from Dennis Miller about his stand up routine. Howard said What a loving thing for Dennis to do most people wouldn't have said anything. Howard then said Dennis is really funny he does a quick fire approach. If I recall correctly didn't Howard bust on Dennis Miller for years especially during his stint as a sports Commentator (saying how boring he was)?
