Acute Depression is no where near as genetically linked as Chronic Depression (like she had) ... Chronic/clinical depression runs about 50% genetic. The addiction stats are similar... Go to any AA or NA meeting, and more times than not, the addiction runs in the family... In many cases people who weren't even raised by their addict parents STILL wound up being an addict.... I'm not using this to justify or excuse ones behavior, mind you... Simply to explain it

I think the critical thing that you are missing is that "Dr" Drew has used his pulpit to put his profession on TV, and as such put his name behind providing successful and useful treatment of his patients' afflictions.

I think if you sat him down, and grilled him with questions regarding his thoughts on his treatment, and if he really thought he'd be successful "fixing" these ego driven addicts that he highlights on his show... he might have his own moment of clarity.

Hell, they parade Steven Adler out every other season for almost comedic affect. Somehow that guy just can't get himself to die.

To say he doesn't prey on that is naive at best.
While I wouldn't disagree that some have used the experience as just another paycheck, and/or another chance to get their face on TV.... For many, it was their last resort ....I mean, who would have ever imagined that Tom Sizemore could have ever stayed sober after watching his behavior on the show.. Yet, he appears to be so far .. If I was a betting man, I would have bet the farm that he'd have been the first to die from the show.... For those people who have never had to deal with addiction, I'm sure they think its just a matter of saying "no", and then you're forever sober... But, that's not the way it is. As cliche as it may sound, you MUST work the program every day of your life or you will eventually relapse ... I would bet the farm that the people that have died from Celebrity Rehab were not actively working their program ...

Sorry but pimping out your patients to possibly help someone else (while grossly exploiting them and their problems) is still unethical.

He's exploiting patients right in front of him...in the hopes he'll help someone about whom he knows nothing?

do the addicts on his show know they're serving this benevolent purpose?

I'm not sure what you mean by that... I've never heard him tout how wonderful the Addiction Specialist field is... Up until a few years ago "addiction" was taboo.. No one spoke about it, and it was something no one wanted to admit to, or have to deal with... Even though there were a lot more people suffering from it than originally believed.... As far as parading Steven Adler around, that's absolutely a part of recovery .. Newly sober people need to see that there is life after addiction. ..that you can function & actually enjoy life without the addictive behavior that brought you to your knees ... And people who have been sober for awhile (like Adler) need to never lose sight of where they came from.. They do that by "giving back", which is an integral part of anyone's successful recovery....So, while it may look like they're parading around a zombie-like former rock star, they're really bringing someone out that most people are familiar with, and consequently can identify with..Which ultimately helps them in their recovery

You're obviously not familiar with how recovery functions, then.... Because that IS a regular part of most recovery meetings

They have their own self serving agenda too. No one's looking for any of these people and they'll to anything to get publicity. Both sides are exploiting equally.

A significant portion of that good will goes out the window when a measurable percentage of your patients die anyway.
