With that logic, you must not think Miguel Cabrera is an athlete.

Danica Patrick is an average (good looking when shopped) bitchy girl. People who sit on their asses and make turns for a few hours are not athletes. They are good drivers but there is no athletic aspect to this competition. They press the gas, the brakes, and they shift gears.

I would even rate golfers as more athletic than the drivers.

I tend to agree with your assessment especially given the conditions today. It's a sporting event, so in that way it's a sport. But athletic? No. It's like shooting or hunting or fishing. All are done for sport but few people (I shoot and fish) consider it an athletic endeavor. I drive to work. I don't think there's anything athletic about that, but if I ran or biked or even walked to work, it would be athletic. I don't know where the line is, but driving as an athletic sport? No.

It used to be that NASCAR drivers worked on their own cars, too. Now the thing is completely "managed." It's even less sporting nowadays.

Is 500 miles at high speeds with other cars taxing? Sure. Athletic? No. I've driven from Georgia to Minnesota without sleeping or resting. It was taxing, but it wasn't athletic.

And yes, I consider golfing athletic. I don't golf, so it's not an "I'm an athlete!" thing. They walk the course, have to use their personal body power and control to drive the ball, pitch out of traps, get very precise with putting.

Driving at those speeds and at that level is skillful. I'd finish last at Daytona, no doubt.

But sitting on the ass, shifting gears, pressing the gas and brake, is not athletic.

I had such high hopes for her in the sport but she has just a shitty personality and she quickly became a token in the sport. She had some chops to begin with she just never developed. Katheryn Legg, now that is a woman that can drive. She is getting royally fucked over and will probably not even get a ride this year.
Fuck Danica! and Fuck Tony George! The shithead responsible for killing open-wheeled racing in this country.
Dude I'm as big a Champ Car fan as anyone, but Katt sucks.

Golf is a sport that fat men can play. A sport like tennis where in a match the competitor sprints off and on for a mile and still uses hand eye coordination makes an athlete.

There are tremendous differences in the athleticism between sports. I played football, basketball, and baseball in high school. The most difficult practices, in my opinion, were basketball. A good portion of those practices were running back and forth on the court without a break. In football? Yeah, it was tough to wear pads in the sun, but we did a LOT of standing around. Baseball? Wind-sprints were the most physically demanding thing we did.

But hitting a baseball traveling at high speed, that moved around almost magically, with a thin stick was the most challenging thing in all three sports. It was the least athletic of the three but most challenging at the skill-level.
