I had to take a hunter's safety course that covered guns and archery.

If you want a compound go with a Matthews, they're top of the food chain. But if you want a crossbow go with the one I have, It's an Equinox made by Excalibur. no cams to fuck with and you can change the string by yourself in like 5 mins. Also they are pretty much guaranteed for life.

I had a a Bear bow I got off a classified for $150. I bagged a lot of deer and it was a great starter bow. The older bows are ok, but don't compare to the newer ones available now. If your patient and scout a good area it won't matter what kind of bow you use because any of them will kill. I would love to shoot a hog with one. A lot of good archery shops will let you shoot any of the bows before a purchase. The Mathew's seemed to long for me to shoot from a climber IMO. Everyone has different opinions so get out and find what fits you best.

This Bowtech is fast, light and accurate. This package ran for around $800.

A little bactine will clear that right up.

Seriously, take a look at the flagship models of any archery company; Matthews, Hoyt, Bowtech, etc. You don't have to pay that much money to get a great hunting bow. No matter how much those companies would like you to believe, you really can't radically revolutionize the technology of a stick and a string. You may see a bow advertised as being amazingly fast but, guess what? Physics says they had to give up other desirable traits to get that speed such as quietness, draw smoothness, accuracy.

If you read a message board like archerytalk.com you'll see that people are extremely loyal to bow brands but the reality is that the best way to find the right bow for you is to find a good shop and try as many bows as they'll let you and they should let you try every bow you want if they want your business.

I do. For years. Get a PSE but more importantly find something comfortable.
