i dont think people are dumber. it's about the same mix of stupid to brilliant. i think there is a lot of misinformation that makes smart people believe stupid shit.

There has been a major effort for 20? 30? years, to dumb down our public schools, so that the borderline retards won't "feel bad", and their parents won't get pissed off because they're stupid, too.

College is no longer an institution of higher learning; it's a vo-tech school.

Education/intelligence is looked down upon by an enormous portion of society as being weak, gay, elitist, snobbish, etc. I've noticed this in all ethnic groups, mostly of lower economic classes, whites included, and I don't want this to turn into partisan shit-slinging but most right wingers especially seem outright hostile and derisive towards anyone with more than a GED.

PS: I don't think texting and internet chat is to blame, but is syptomatic of the problem in language. It's almost Orwellian, how people no longer tend to have actual discussions that go beyond: "LOL. OMG!.. K, BRB....."

Truly. I got cousins raised in France....get your cheese-eatin' surrender-monkey jokes out of the way. Their high school level education was more intense than most of our university level schooling, plus being in the heart of Europe, they can all speak 4 or 5 different languages, fluently. They know more about our history than most Americans, not to mention world history. I think I'm fairly smart, not a genius, but a little above the median....when I'm around my Franco-Texan relatives I feel like Corky the retard....(srs)

I'm sitting on a plane right now, flying to Denver. There's a guy in the row in front of me, opposite side of the isle....mid 30's.....married.

First thing he pulled out to read was a comic book! And an erotic one at that. The flight attendant came down the isle a few minutes ago, and did a double take cause he got to a page where a guy was doing a chick doggy style.

Now he's put that away, and pulled out his I-Pad. He's watching Star Wars.

Along with that, people are dependent on the machines. Several years ago I realized I could barely do basic math anymore because I'd used calculators so long. I've forced myself to use old school pencil and paper shit when time isn't an issue, and often double check myself with a calculator. There are prolly other things like that too, but I got up way too early today...
