any a you fools ever have a house built for yourself?

i'm in the market for a new house but i can't find anything that suits my needs so i'm considering building. you ever done it? sounds like a pain in the ass but maybe worth it.

also, fyi: ditch your shorts that end below the knee. this spring/summer, you're going to want the hem to be 3 to 5 inches above the knee. don't be a fashion loser in 2013.
you just don't turn it off.

no man, i need a large, open living space and a nice master suite with a steam shower, but i don't need a ton of bedrooms or anything bigger than 2500 - 3000 sq feet, seeing as it's only me an my girlie. there's nothing on the market like that here. anything close is a house for families an i don't need no family home.

You gotta have a contractor that knows his shit. Also, make sure you have an architect that can communicate well with the general contractor.

the local gas company would not run gas to the house unless 80% of the units on the block also wanted gas, so it was an electric and oil furnace house. the utility costs were outrageous.

neighbors put in-ground pools in that disrupted the water table and flooded the basements. one sued me because my basement was not affected (!) because i was on a high plot of land.

dealing with subcontractors, especially electrical. mine made a deal with the local inspector. none of the outlets or dual switch lights functioned right. he used 3 conductor instead of 4 and combined the ground and neutral so that the light switches would blow the breakers if they both were thrown in the same position. had to file criminal charges against both of them.

i paid extra to have 2 additional rows of cinderblock used in the foundation so the basement ceiling would be higher and i wouldn't have to stoop downstairs. the idiot guy doing the forced air duct work used the extra space to hang the ducts lower...

the township failed the electrical work after the criminal case and i had to rip it all out. i put it in myself the second time, strictly according to code and they failed it because i wasn't a licensed electrician (the state law does not require you to have a license...) so I ended up hiring another contractor with a license to sign off that he supervised me...

I will never have one built again; I would rather find something that is close to what I want and have it enhanced.

you want what is called an A frame design. you can usually find them as vacation or seasonal homes in the mountain areas. i've seen hybrid A-frame and ranch styles around for the past 10 years or so; the working part of the house is a one story ranch and the living space is a 2 story A frame with a vaulted ceiling. they look really nice, especially as i'm tall and the ceiling is so far away. it does get difficult to cool them in the summer as the hot air tends to stay high up.

I've built 10,000 homes over a 20 plus year career. PM me if you need some advice.

i'm thinking more of an updated craftsman or a modern architectural home.

NJ is a nightmare for housing because its really 21 separate counties each with their own rules and laws. my town passed a rule that houses could only be colored brown, white, or beige after some fool painted his pink....
