They both do. It's interesting to hear someone articulate the frustration of being interviewed by Howard. It's something a lot of us have complained about over the years. He wants a guest to be interesting enough to get him press (and now he just blatantly instructs them to do it), but he'll be also insult, belittle or subtly demean the person so he always, in his mind, comes out on top. It's a sickness.
it's silly. everyone talks shit about howard, but when you present a more intelligent alternative everyone becomes a howie fan.
O&A might be a better show but their show is the exact Stern format from 1994. Opie has said multiple times over the years that he listened to Howard's show and took notes. Anthony keeps in touch with both Jackie and Billy West and invites them on the show to get that golden era Stern magic going again. You can't compare O&A's style as if it is their own. It's not. They took Howard's format of guys like Billy West and Jackie being on microphone, especially with the Jackie Puppet, and made it their own. There's a reason why the only show that rivals Howard's show consists of two Howard superfans including one who went on the Stern Show for the Jackie impression contest.
Opie desperately wants Howard's attention. He has a "love me daddy" complex with Howard. Anthony already got his props from Howard several times. Anthony in the Jackie impression contest is an all time classic show moment. Howard had Gary once call Anthony at home during the 90s to do his Kinison voice over the phone. Opie is jealous. If O&A were so much better than Stern then they would not need to constantly mention it because they were secure. Opie is insecure. "Notice me Howard!! Notice me!!" Every few weeks he mentions Howard on air or on twitter. Anthony only mentions Howard with quick shoutouts like saying "hoohoo" anytime the word 'stern' is used. The other day they played a clip where someone said "I gave him a stern warning" and Anthony did his Howard voice for a second.
I love O&A but Opie is insane with his desire to be noticed by Howard. I am an O&A daily listener. I'm listening to today's show right now actually as I've rewound the Scientology interview twice.
As a semi-new O&A listener I m pissed that I wasted my time with Howard's current years. There is no comparison as to which show does better interviews and is more funny. I have actually listened to older interviews of the same person on the same day and the O&A interviews are so much better. Like the podcast says it is more like just sitting down to hang out.
I do not think O&A would be around without Howard but I do think they take the interviews to a much better level than Howard.
I also want to say for anyone who reads this and listens to O&A...the show seems to be going too much into the gay area lately. If I wanted that I would go back to Howard
why did it come to this? opie hates howard, but anthony LOVES him. O&A have intelligent guests on, while howard caters to dumb people...
I thought this is why I joined? I was the biggest HOWARD FAN UNTIL 2007. why can't people adjust?
I don't hate O&A but I didn't get any more laughs from them than from the HSS for the few weeks I gave them a shot after I finally gave up on HS at the end of 2011. Some of their posted clips were OK, but for the few weeks that I tried listening to them in the morning, there wasn't a single conversation that was funny or worth listening to...and if that's what I was looking for, I would have just continued listening to the pathologically lying nutjob in the hair hat and his delusional fat cunt parrot. I also tried Covino & Rich and Abe Canan, but both shows are unlistenable and make the HSS and O&A sound like rocket science by comparison. So far, all I've found is Jay Thomas and Dealin' Straight but those two guys suck up to HS so much and to other douches like Trump that I may have to bail on them too. Nick & Artie was good just to hear Artie again but not really worth listening to either and I haven't tried Artie's new show because the comments about it here don't leave me too optimistic about it. Pretty much a radio wasteland out there right now as far as I can tell.

Completely stopped listening to the trainwreck called THSS in January 2012 except for turning it on in the bathroom when I shit or shower and I wish I'd pulled the plug the day Artie left. It's so bad that I've actually gotten out of the shower to turn it the fuck off.

O&A do a better show now than Stern. Both shows have been going downhill for some time.
Anybody that works 4 or 5 days a week has Stern beat nowadays.
My take on it:
In the days of old, Howard was unbeatable. He was THE best person in radio.
Im not too sure if O & A wouldnt exist without Howard though. While I definitely feel that O & A were directly inspired by Howard's brand of honest radio, I find it ironic that Howard was the one that started the "honest guy in radio" routine, but we find out that he is anything but. Who knows. Maybe when Howard had a drive to do good radio there was a level of honesty there. Nowadays, there are so many lies that he's choking on them. Sad.
I still listen to alot of the old shows, but seeing what he has become, I cant help but question on how "real" some of those callers were, some of those bits were, and just how spontaneous he was.
Howard never reads the book nor see the movie his guests come in to promote. He simply relies on psychoanalysis and cliff notes provided by Young Will.
