Yes. Only the dumbasses didn't get it was a joke. He noticed that when people heard a person was Jewish, you could almost hear an awkward, embarrassed, unfamiliar tone to their response but he didn't hear the same thing when people found out someone was only half-Jewish, so he decided to just start saying that and watch/listen to people's reaction.

As one professional to another, I'll give you the enlightened goyim answer as to why I believe Howard used this charade. Most people don't realize you can't be "half jewish". I'm from the pittsburgh area, and in 1994-95 when Howard came on the air there he actually had an advertisement for his show where he told our audience that he was "half jewish" (no bullshit). In pittsburgh, virtually every jew in town lives in the "jewish part of town" (squirrel hill), if you don't live there or close to there you would have no exposure to jewish heritage. I myself had virtually no exposure to jews as a child (other than a girlfriend who's dad was a non-practising jew) until college where I met a lot of jews from squirrel hill. Once I went to Philly, well there were a lot more jews and I became even more familiar with the heritage.

I think because the jewish population is so concentrated in a few areas in the country you all may not realize how absent jewish culture is from many parts of the country. In a market like Nashville TN or Utah or even South Carolina, I feel Howard believed he could convince his audience that he was a "regular guy" much easier by saying he was "half jewish". I too think he believed it could only allow him to spread syndication more thoroughly by lying about his heritage.

You are over analyzing this. It's an obvious joke because it's impossible to be half Jewish. You are or are not Jewish.

Claiming partial jewish heritage is a little more ambiguous than bragging about being in a war that you weren't even old enough to fight in - if he could've gone it would've been for the last month. Plus there's also no real joke in claiming that you're only half a jew. But there is a huge amount of genuine duplicitousness with Jews denying their heritage when it suits them. I understand people don't want to be discriminated against, but to be so connected to their religion/heritage on one hand (assuming at least some of them are) and then being so willing to try to hide it for something as petty and trivial as wealth, status or influence seems a little low rent to me. It sorta shows what's truly important to them on one hand, and it also shows how casually some people will lie about things that are supposedly so important. If your culture is known for practices like that it's no wonder where some of the stereotypes come from (as inaccurate as they might be to some).


And it wasn't a bit, it was a real piece of made up history - a caller brought it up once and Gary got all uncomfortable. You could tell that he wasn't sure if it was ok to really go into it, or what the reason behind it was. It's a lot easier to try to pass something off as a "joke" when you're caught in a lie, as Howard routinely does.
