I figure if I get up at 5, I should have enough time to get some running in.

It's .6 miles around my block.

There's tons of questions. I could Google it all but it seems there are experts right here.

    Stretching? What kind?

Is it ok to run on an empty stomach? SHould I eat/drink something first?

What kind of clothes do you people wear for running in winter? It's cold out!!

Hermmmm.... There's more but I'm at work.

    Thanks
Don't stretch before you run, stretch after, walk before your run for 5-10 minutes. It's ok to run on an empty stomach, I am old school as far as clothing choices, hooded sweat shirt, cotton sweats, shorts. If you are really out of shape I would run-walk 1 minute running - 1 minute walking for the first week, then increase the
run intervals as fitness improves. 2-1, 3-1 etc...

    Dave!

    Welcome, brutha.

A lot of us approach the specifics of running a bit differently -- diet, stretching, gears, goals.

Here's my two cents. Others may have even better advice that conflicts with mine.

I'd definitely recommend going to c25k.com and downloading the training podcasts which will take you from being a non-runner to running a full 5K in 9 weeks. It's really simple (listen while you're on your run and it'll tell you when to run and when to walk) and it's manageable. I think a lot of people trip themselves up by starting out with a lot of enthusiasm, setting unrealistic running goals for themselves, struggle, come to the conclusion that running sucks, and give up.

I eat low carb, which kind of goes against the conventional wisdom of carb-loading, but it's what works for me. It also has the endorsement of Prof. Tim Noakes, sports sciences research from the University of Capetown.

As far as hydrating, I drink when I'm thirsty, and only water.

I usually just run in shorts, hat, gloves, and a short-sleeved running shirt over a long-sleeved running shirt, but I recently bought a pair of faggy running tights when it's extremely cold out.

    1 Goatcabin=3 miles.

After each run post your miles here and I'll add it to the leaderboard, which you can check out by clicking the link in my sig.

2-5-2013 Another lackluster Goatcabin. Feel 2 inches shorter due to the impact of today's run. May inject walking breaks if this current slump continues.
