I work for HBO. After Rock did his first two HBO specials and his tv show (that had Nick DiPaolo and Louis CK as writers) he was well respected. He and Carlin were the kings of standup and the comedy portion of HBO. Then he started doing nothing but obnoxious Hollywood preaching on stage and put together a string of awful movies. Truly awful movies. Almost every movie is an abortion that Rock stars in.

And then he really started going into the political rhetoric on stage and it failed. He has no more clout as a standup outside of a small base of fans. Patrice O'Neal and Doug Stanhope destroyed him over the last few years. Colin Quinn, Paul Mooney, and lots of other have blown by Chris Rock. Even worse now is that a lot of standup comics loathe Chris behind his back. Especially when they talk about how lots of Rock's jokes conveniently have exact phrases from George Carlin and Charles Barnett's routines.

It's sad that Bill Hicks, Sam Kinison, and Patrice O'Neal are dead and Chris Rock and the pro-establishment hacks are flourishing.
