I'm happy to be in a union. I see what management goes through and the company is always fucking them over one way or another. You want to keep your job you better be in the the in crew. It's not so much job performance because someone could replace them at the drop of a hat. It's more about who you know. I go to work, do my job and go home. I don't have to deal with the bullshit. If the company needs me to work an extra 30 hours that week, I get monetary compensation bargained for by my union. To say I shouldn't be compensated or I should have picked a different field to work in absurd and unrealistic.

When companies are doing well and they want to squeeze every last dollar out of you for market shares then yes this is wrong.

I think the USPS still does a decent job relatively cheap, but I have patronized many post offices over the years, and the workers are nearly all surly and unfriendly and seem to resent the shit out of every customer. The ones who drive around all day delivering are usually pretty happy campers, though.....
What a miserable life to be a postal worker. Going postal isn't just a figure of speech. The delivery people are usually more down to earth. My neighbor is a carrier and he seems at least partially normal.

This is pretty much how I feel about being in a union. Sure it sucks to see guys that slack off and still make the same amount of money, but I've also worked non union jobs where the boss was buddy buddy with someone that didn't know a darn thing and they made way more than they were worth. The company I work for is a 24/7 operation, it knows no holiday, and is dangerous. The union ensures that we are compensated well, and are able to work in a reasonably safe manor. We have the right to refuse to do something in an unsafe without worrying if we will be fired for not doing it.

Biggest problem w/ postal workers and many other union government workers is how their pensions are calculated. The averaging of the last 2(?) years earnings, where they work all the over time they can. I had a friends mom that spent years on disability w/ Post Office, for various reasons, and did as little work as possible when she showed up, then worked like a dog for the last 2 years and retired getting fat checks to spend on can beer and crack.

If there are 5 guys in an office and the company needs someone to work the holiday, who will do it? Do you force someone? Is that your idea of fair? As far as the guy painting your car, you have to make a deal with that guy. You bargain for the price. If you want your car by monday the painter says fuck you, I don't work weekends. When a union bargains for wages and benefits, the company can certainly say go fuck yourself. You act like unions are absolute. If you are not performing your tasks up to par the company can fire you. Corporations really value their employees very little. They could give a fuck about you. Be happy your employer doesn't find a cheaper way to get your job done.

You're approaching this as though the applicant has a right to be on my payroll.......Most rational people would find the incentive in keeping their job...If you (hypothetically) work for me, that likely means that I chose you over a few dozen other applicants .. As I do with everyone I hire, I lay out the good, the bad & the ugly for them BEFORE they come on board ...I let them decide if my expectations are unreasonable before they agree to work for us.... ..As an employer why should I feel like I need to entice you to come perform the job you asked my to hire you to do ??? ...Is the Medical & Dental Insurance we offer for you and your family not enough? Are the 6 paid holidays & 4 personal days a year not enough?...You mean I have to pay you triple time if your work-day happens to fall on a holiday?? ...... As for requiring people to work on days they're not normally scheduled to work, I let them control their fate...In my case, I require that all my loan-reps pull credit-apps on a minimum of 10 applicants per week...If they don't, them I require they work half day on Saturday. If they have plans or don't feel like working on Saturday, then I'd expect them to work diligently during the normal work week to get whats required of them.... They know that from the onset. They also know that I don't pay overtime in those situations.... If they piss & moan or try to circumnavigate my policies, then I politely terminate their employment and find someone whose a little more malleable.

As far as Unions bargaining for wages & benefits, you know as well as I do that if they don't get what they want then they go on strike & virtually shut down the company's ability to make money... That borders on extortion in my book !!.....And you also know as well as I do that trying to terminate a union employee is about as easy as it is to scale Mount Everest without a Sherpa or an Oxygen tank..... I don't know what part of the country you live in, but here in Southern California we have a current court case involving a public school teacher that's been charged with 23 counts of "lewd conduct" with his pupils (including feeding them cookies with his actual semen used as a topping)....Because the Teachers Union was protecting him, he was on "paid leave" for several months before the district finally fired him... After he was fired, he filed a lawsuit (backed by his Union) for wrongful termination.... Which resulted in the distract having to shell out another $40,000 to this dirtbag to finally get rid of him once & for all...... You cant tell me the Union did the right thing in this case. They put their Union members well being ahead of the kids ....And, you hear over & over again similar stories of ludacris behavior of Labor Unions putting the rights of their members ahead of common sense .... ..
...Most employers aren't stupid. They realize the importance of quality employees, and they're gonna do what they need to do to keep those employees with them.. Without the Unions extortion tactics
