Yes, HTV is carried in hotels as a pay-per-view in two different manners (as a flat-fee for 24 hours of view time, and a by-show charge). That is one of the main reasons why they always keep porn stars in the HTV lineup, as well as the Miss HTV.
There are very few HTV subscribers. I no longer know the exact number but I would wager it is well below 20K (not counting hotel distribution).
But let's say that that the number is actually 20K paying subscribers. The monthly rate for HTV used to be $14, so revenue generated would be $280K. Half of that (at least) will go to In Demand and the cable company, leaving Howard with $140K per month. The equipment they're using is (most likely) already paid for and the studio is provided by SiriusXM--so there is minimal monthly overhead other than salaries. The number of employees is also minimal, with a chunk of the work being done by non-paid interns. Stern's production company is probably able to write-off a large chunk in taxes too.
Why does Stern even produce HTV? Three basic reasons. The first is because it allows him to claim that his show is still on TV (this was more important before he was on AGT). It gives a degree of credibility when he books guests...they're told they'll be appearing on both his radio show as well as his TV channel. Secondly, it provides jobs for two of his long-time acolytes. Finally, it provides him with a tax write-off (marbles).
Despite all of this, I am somewhat surprised that HTV is still being produced. It wouldn't surprise me if it didn't get cut.
