How does one identify with a team that they have absolutely no vested interest in?

You're not a part owner...You don't personally know anyone on the team....There are no prizes handed out to the fans of the winner... Your being a fan of a "winner" doesn't entitle you to anything tangible, or otherwise....

As a person who grew up playing Little League Baseball (regular and Summer league) & High School Football, I get the fun & emotion associated with playing sports... But I absolutely don't get the rabid fandom one carries for a team that they have absolutely no vested interest in...The giant flags waving from the bed of your truck...The silly flag you fly from your front porch.....The tattoos...... What causes one to be loyal to a certain team?...and, what does one gain by trash-talking an opponent of "your team", when their success or failure has absolutely no impact of any kind on your life?

    Help me to understand. . . .

I had a bacon and spinach souffle today. Now I'm going to a restaurant that makes hamburgers with half ground beef and half ground bacon.

I love those but the fucking peppers keep repeating on me all day. I guess that's not a bad thing right? You pay for the omelette once and get to taste again the rest of the day.

Think a lot of it is generational. Goes back nearly to the founding of this country, 1922.

It probably has something to do with testosterone, the feeling of solidarity, team mentality, gang mentality, I don't know. Representing your home team. It could be more the sport itself, athleticism. Winning, losing. I dunno, I'm a chick.

Because losers want to be part of something bigger than themselves, even if they can't be on a pro sports team themselves.

Don't really care. If it's a blowout either way I'll bail. If it's a decent game I'll stick with it.

I doubt that you ever played baseball.
Friendship isn't about whom you have known the longest... It's about who came and never left your side.
