Duuuuuude -- Each 49er player is trained -- drilled in their head -- not to say anything controversial.
They're taught that if they say something offensive it'll cause a big distraction to the whole team.
They're also taught not to talk shit about gays, since it is San Francisco after all. And talking shit about gays offends most of the fans, including non-gays.

So they hired this guy Jim Harbaugh who instilled discipline, who made sure they didn't talk shit.
You notice it's the worst teams that have the most shit-talking players.
Talking shit is a sign of a a lack of discipline.
The 49ers especially drilled it into their players' heads that the 5000 members of the media had one goal in mind -- to catch them off guard, to say something interesting to write about.
So with all that, Culliver knew he wasn't supposed to say something stupid.
Yet he said something stupid.
It's all his fault.
It's not Artie's fault at all.
Artie was doing his job -- being Artie.
Culliver wasn't doing his job -- which is, don't say anything that would distract the team.
