they believe god sent 2 angels to joseph smith to provide him with some gold plates on which were written god's instructions. they made him dig up the plates at the foot of a small mountain in NYS. nobody believed him so the angels took the plates back before he could show them to anyone else. then the angels dictated god's word to him so he could write it down on some other material. people thought he was nuts so he and his band moved out west to escape being stoned by the other christians. eventually smith was killed for blaspheming but the band kept going west till they reached utah. since they barely made it that far without dying from the trip they figured the other christians would stop chasing them. just their luck but the railroad decided to run through the state. nobody ever saw or found the gold plates.
