The best shows of O&A, the ones that are truly comparable to the legendary Stern days with Jackie and Billy, are the days where Jimmy was gone and Patrice O'Neal sat in the studio. O&A have a great dynamic, Anthony is an incredible talent with voices, and is extremely opinionated and articulate. Opie knows how to keep things going and runs the boards as well as anyone which is not an easy task when you're also on microphone. Patrice was arguably the best comic of his generation and easily in the top five greatest stand ups of all time.

The day where Gallagher came on the show and Patrice sat in is still my favorite O&A moment. It's Patrice just relentlessly tormenting Gallagher. And O&A just sit back and keep things as hostile and awkward as possible. It's on par with what Billy used to do with the Jackie Puppet, harassing guests like Conan, for no reason other than to make himself and others in the studio laugh.

they need to start booking low level guests again just so Jimmy can Ramone them. they haven't done that in a while.

That's back when Howard knew that the guests needed him more than he needed them. Pissing off famous people equaled ratings for him. Now it equals being snubbed from the Hamptons social scene.

I've only been listening to the show for a month or two, and even I know that E-Rock runs the board. Opie is pretty much useless on the show. He has a weak radio voice, nor is he particularly funny. You're just buying into the whole scripted argument as to why Opie is necessary. He's just a guy who got lucky finding Anthony. If Anthony and Jimmy ever decided to leave OPie, he'd pretty much be out of a job.

And while Patrice was a great guest on the show, and a good stand-up, no way was he one of the greatest stand-up's ever to live.

Opie tries too hard to be a radio tough guy, but he occassionally gets in a great line. Example, asking Jimmy "Superfly" Snooka how his old girlfriend was dong, knowing full well that Snooka had more than likely killed her. He gets one of those lines in every three or four years.
