I took an outdoor survival course a few years ago and the instructor showed pictures of what happened after he drank stream water that was not treated and only boiled before he drank it. He was emaciated in a hospital bed on an IV drip. He lost nearly 30 pounds due to diarrhea and the inability to keep any food down for nearly two weeks.

Most (but not all) bacteria are killed after water hits 212 degrees F. If Howard knew anything about hot tubs he'd know that the advised water temperature is between 102 - 104 degrees F. As someone already mentioned that's perfect breeding grounds for bacteria and other micro organisms to grow and spread.

Well a thorough boil will kill some/most bacteria, but not all. Believe it or not, adding a bit of bleach to water will not hurt you, but it will kill the nasty shit. I think the standard recommendation is 8 drops per gallon. Then there's sand filtration which can be done with any container with drainage hole, pant leg, sleeve or even a sock...as nasty as that sounds. Sand is awesome at "scrubbing" bacteria out of that water that passes through it.

Best bet is to buy a water bottle that has a built in filter or something like a Survival Straw/Life Straw. The filtration bottles are great because you can use them like regular water bottles even where you have a clean water source.

EDIT: I meant bleach in addition to a boil.

Sorry. the bacteria wasn't from the zip line. It was from the water into which she fell when her zip line or something associated with it failed and sliced her leg.

You can actually safely add bleach to your bathwater too. I read an article in some science magazine about bacteria. some doctors were attempting a treatment for painful eczema by having the patient lie in a bath with a higher concentration of bleach.

it actually alleviates the symptoms. so the theory is that eczema might be related to bacteria which, on most people's skin is either harmless or has some beneficial effect but in patients with eczema, their bodies react to that bacteria (some protein or something).
