I was a kid but I remember it as very tense and scary at that time.

That was before having 80 24/7 news channels, but it was always on the 3 network's news, and I think ABC had a 30minute update every night after the normal news. I remember it always started like "America Held Hostage: Day 271" or something. I was like 12, 13, 14 at the time, and we thought there was gonna be a war and we'd be getting drafted as soon as we were of age.
It was scary. Nothing like that had ever happened to Americans that I could remember. The failed rescue attempt, then the release after Reagan was elected, it was all pretty confusing at the time.
