the gospel, or good news, is that Jesus came to earth and paid the price for all of our sin; He was made into sin for us, and He gave His life to save us.

Our part is to thank Him, acknowledge Him as the Son of God, declare that He is Lord, and know that He is alive.

I also would like to defend MatthewT a bit here as well; most Americans (and that includes Evangelical Christians) have absolutely no knowledge of Christian theology. The idea that there are good and bad people, and we have to delineate the criterion for deciding that, was inherited from the Puritans who were booted from Europe for their extreme religious views. Anglicans, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians never held such severe views of humanity.

This is why the concept of "works" is so important to Catholics; people like John Calvin argued that because God was perfect, God must necessarily be the cause of and have knowledge of all future events. Under Calvinism, your criticism would probably be apt. Traditional Christianity, though, maintains that we are all inherently flawed beings who have free will (we are not God, and cannot be as God). We all fuck up, and will continue to. That is why confession is so important to Catholics; if accepting Jesus meant that I was freed from sin and the weakness of my flesh, confessing nonexistent sins would be useless. The idea that we can "sin all we want" is incorrect; the totality of our actions, and the ability to atone for them, is the purpose of our existence. Good works are the way in which we can atone for them; the point is essentially that the evil and the good we do in life lives after us through the people we have affected.

That is absolutely incorrect; indulgences were originally intended only for the rich, who were usually nobles and unable to undertake risky pilgrimages or to devote their lives to the Church. During the mid to late middle ages, the selling of indulgences was expanded to include lower classes, largely because the papacy was losing central control of the Church and unable to reign in greedy priests. The Counter-Reformation and the Jesuits cleaned it up in the 1600's; it is one of several dark issues in the Church's history, but none of that money went to the pope directly at any point. At least crack a history book.
