One last thing I will say though... for all the negative things I've said about teachers I save the vast majority of my ire for those in the administrative sector of the profession. Those motherfuckers get paid even more and sometimes outnumber the teachers in a district.

You have people on both extremes that are adding nothing of value, and in fact, distracting from the real issues (overcrowding, top heavy administration, tenure system, etc).
I don't think it's unreasonable for a person to get paid for the time they put into their job, equitably.

We disagree on what constitutes equity, though.

Out of curiosity, does anyone "deserve" a pension? or are you one of the people who think no one is entitled to a pension and everyone is supposed to know how to invest their money in a volatile stock market and other avenues in order to be able to retire at a reasonable age?

Its high time public sector employees get an increase in immediate pay and do away with the antiquated pension system. Convert the pension shit to 401ks or make them save their money like normal people have to because its the pensions that are bankrupting the system.
    spoke/posted too soon.

    I thought so.

And it is, for the corporate world. But it pales in comparison to the teachers plan.
Probably because your company snowed everyone into thinking they were the greatest benefits in the world and that you should kiss the ground upon which they walk for offering you the pittance they give you while simultaneously raising your contributions into those benefits.

Same old story, same old dance. It's not that the teacher's benefits are so much better (even though they are); it's HOW they got those benefits: collective bargaining. So their employer couldn't/wouldn't give them more money in salary. They gave it to them in one of the other myriad ways in which money comes out of our take-home pay.

You're missing the entire point of how their benefits are attained.

    Christ that sucks.

You're making me rethink one of my previous posts about collective bargaining.

You don't think it's considered "work" to make sure that the little, snot-pickin' bastards aren't cheating or disrupting the class?

I'd be soooo fired in like 5 minutes. Thank GOD I don't have to deal with kids at my job. The adults are bad enough.

I don't think you're giving enough consideration to managing children the way a person at any other job has to manage adults.

Those that can, do. Those that can't hire someone else to do it for them. Or get the government to force others to.

He worked just one year as a full-time teacher in New York. But he has collected nearly $1 million for 13 years for doing almost nothing.

Aryeh Eller, 46, a former music teacher at Hillcrest HS in Queens, is the longest-sitting “rubber room” teacher in the city. He was yanked from the classroom in 1999 and confessed to repeated sexual harassment of female students, according to a 2000 investigative report.

But a hearing officer who decides whether tenured teachers can be fired dismissed the case, ruling that Eller wasn’t told his rights. The DOE, considering him unfit for teaching, put him in a holding room for a decade.
A classical guitarist who performs in local concerts, Eller has seen his salary rise to $85,000 due to automatic longevity increases under the teachers’ contract.

Since his 1999 suspension, he has collected $943,000, plus health and pension benefits — and the total will hit $1 million this year....................

Unions suck. The teachers unions have ruined American schools, once ranked #1 in the world (in the 70's), now fallen to about 30th world-wide.

I'm a teacher who would LOVE to get rid of unions. Bring it on! Observe me, rate me and give me a merit raise. I work my ass off but I can't say the same for everyone I work with. My union has never done one thing for me.

its not like they fail at a career so they go back to school for teaching. they usually start with that.
those that are smart hire someone else to do for them.

Yup, my wife feels the same way. However, it becomes difficult to assess how well a teacher is doing. Do you base it on the students scores as many are proposing? Well, that can unfairly shift blame to the teacher, when the real problems are at home. Do you base it on the one or two observations? Peer review? I would think a decent principal should have a good idea on how each of their teachers are performing. Just like my boss does. Feedback from parents, colleagues, etc.
