Duck Dynasty shows no signs of slowing. The A&E series' season finale drew a record 9.6 million viewers during its one-hour episode -- and an equally impressive 5.5 million adults 18-49.

That haul in the key demo puts it ahead of all of cable and broadcast offerings for the night -- including American Idol. Duck Dynasty's 4.3 rating with adults 18-49 rating tops the preliminary showing for Idol (3.2 rating) by 34 percent.

Duck Dynasty previously set a A&E record in February when it returned to 8.6 million viewer. Wednesday's episode topped the previous record by 1 million.

In the network's adults 25-54 demo, Duck Dynasty outperformed its 18-49 showing with an average 5.5 million viewers. It also raked in 2.6 million adults 18-34.

The show, which has seen its bearded stars negotiating for a pay increase, is expected to start production on its fourth season soon -- with a premiere eyed for later in the year.

I don't watch that show, but it is clear the shows on cable are far superior than most anything the networks have to offer these days. I (like robin) was a huge Spartacus fan. I rank that my top 10 favorite shows of all time. I don't know the ratings for it , but I loved it. Even with all the cheesey cgi blood.

I think it is time for the big 4 (or 5 if you include Univision ) to start using the after 10pm safe harbor for what it is for. Freedom of language and content.

Combine these with even a mediocre story (True Blood) and you get a massive hit. Meanwhile you watch a network show and they come off so tame and neutered after watching cable shows. NBC is pushing a little with hannibal and that show will probably get shut down because of the violence and dark nature.

Demo = Advertising dollars

CBS has NCIS with 20M viewers but the advertising dollars follow the customer's desired demo. NCIS' average age is 65 and AI is much lower which is what the advertisers, network execs and wall street want.

What good is being #1 if Madison Avenue wont pay top dollar for advertising on the show?
