You bought it... paid $$$ for it.. But it's no longer yours.. as of this weekend.

This makes me fucking livid. Its in the news.. Google it.

As of this weekend it is now illegal to unlock your smartphone, subject to up to a $500,000 fine and up to five years in prison. Therefore it is now illegal to unlock your bought-and-paid-for smartphone to use on other carriers. You have to buy a new one.

If this is the case then give a free fucking phone with every plan.. if I cant touch the phone I paid for motherfuckers.

Well, if you only put down $2000 and borrow the rest from the bank, you don't own the whole car.

Yes.. in your hypothetical the BANK owns part of your car until it is fully paid off. But not the car company. In this case even if you BUY THE PHONE you can go to jail or be fined for unlocking YOUR own phone.

Ya.. But lets say you move outside of a Verizon area of service. But want to keep your beloved iPhone.. you can't. Even though you paid for your iPhone. And if you do you are now liable for a $500,000 fine or 5 years in prison for unlocking your phone. I think that sucks HUGE.

it's illegal for you to unlock it. it's not illegal for your carrier to unlock it. AT&T and Verizon are still unlocking phones after the contract period expires, when requested.

this is not a new law: it's the lovely DCMA law exception re-enabled.

sure you do. you own the car and you own the bank the rest. you sign a collateral note that gives them the right to reposes the collateral if you default on the loan. the key word is reposess: you can't repossess something you already have. the only time you don't own the car is when you lease it.

It's very simple. If you buy the phone and pay full price, you can buy it unlocked.

If you buy the phone subsidized, you have to wait until your contract is over. Then the phone co will unlock it for you.

The only people affected by this "change" are the ones looking to break the rules.

Have fun convincing your carrier to unlock your phone for use with it's competitor.. can't wait to hear that story.

    1. You DO pay for all of it. It's just that part of it is in the form of higher monthly service charges.

    2. As long as legalized bribery is allowed to continue in the form of "campaign donations", you can't be surprised by this sort of thing.

    3. Start with Verizon and you won't be needing to swap carriers.

    4. Alternately, sell your phone on Ebay if you want to switch and you'll get roughly the ACV of it.

No, that's why you can't cancel without paying ETF. They are subsidizing the phone $300-400. And yes, they will get paid that $300-400 back over time via your bill. But at the time of sale, T, VZ, or S are paying $300-400 on your behalf to apple.

All carriers in the US will do this if you are beyond your contract.

It is spelled out in simple terms there. As long as you aren't trying to pull a fast one, unlocking is a non-issue. If you are then, THAT is why the law exists.
