it's illegal for you to unlock it. it's not illegal for your carrier to unlock it. AT&T and Verizon are still unlocking phones after the contract period expires, when requested.

this is not a new law: it's the lovely DCMA law exception re-enabled.

sure you do. you own the car and you own the bank the rest. you sign a collateral note that gives them the right to reposes the collateral if you default on the loan. the key word is reposess: you can't repossess something you already have. the only time you don't own the car is when you lease it.

It's very simple. If you buy the phone and pay full price, you can buy it unlocked.

If you buy the phone subsidized, you have to wait until your contract is over. Then the phone co will unlock it for you.

The only people affected by this "change" are the ones looking to break the rules.

No, that's why you can't cancel without paying ETF. They are subsidizing the phone $300-400. And yes, they will get paid that $300-400 back over time via your bill. But at the time of sale, T, VZ, or S are paying $300-400 on your behalf to apple.

It is spelled out in simple terms there. As long as you aren't trying to pull a fast one, unlocking is a non-issue. If you are then, THAT is why the law exists.
