Call a Title company and they can give you the background on the house, including all past owners, liens, tax amounts, sale dates, etc .... If you don't know anyone at a title company you can use a website, but you'll most likely have to pay for it......

You can request the same info on the foreclosed house... Request the transaction history and it'll show you when the Notice Of Default was filed, when it was foreclosed on, and who the new vested owners are & how much it sold for at auction
