You don't see how this point makes your initial question nonsensical?
There have always been nuts and there will always be nuts, trying to compartmentalize the motivations behind the atrocities they commit is foolish.
The Press is the reason so many people struggle to accept and understand this point. The worldwide near instantaneous fame these people now receive is so much more pervasive than it was in the past, it seems like the problem is becoming more pervasive than it actually is.
The best thing we can do is improve mental health screenings and identifying people with real mental illness and blocking their access. Much easier said than done.
I really don't know what makes an individual reach the breaking point. Especially to the point where they snap mentally and seek some sort of fulfillment in hurting others.
I do know that Columbia University professor Dr. Michael Stone has what he calls "The scale of Evil" which he feels sheds some light on what makes mass murderers tick...

My original question was: "What causes someone to walk into a location and start murdering people they barely know (or don't know at all)??"
The question is a perfectly legitimate topic for discussion. Hardly nonsensical
Obviously there have always been nuts & loons.. But, more & more of them have decided to exact their revenge on a larger sector of society, who are typically uninvolved in the persons life, or cause of frustration... In the past these types of killings often were carried out on the crazy persons family or co-workers that they knew intimately .... This, more & more, no longer seems to be the case... They're random killings that appear to be a statement against society in general, as opposed to revenge on a personal target...
ok. your premise covers a very small percentage of shootings, much less mass shootings.
most mass shootings have been done at the shooter's place of education or employment, or sometimes their significant other's place of employment.
most people murdered are murdered by someone they know
now, if you had a hardcore gang initiation, like spray and pray a crowd of other gang members, that has logic behind it as well; they live kill or be killed, and they do not expect to grow old.
The day you give your heart to Jesus, He will set you free.
there was a guy flew his plane into the IRS building. self explanatory
timothy mcveigh gave his reasons for blowing up the federal building
political assassinations are self evident
no, the real random shooters, the two dudes in DC who sniped people from the trunk of an old beat up nova, that's the one that scares most people. cause everybody buys gas
er, except HAL
The day you give your heart to Jesus, He will set you free.
that'll show her who the morons are![]()

"there's no one you can save that can't be saved"
As always, I've readily admitted that I come here for a little levity & to take sporadic breaks from my high stress, mentally-taxing job.... However, many people (such as yourself) come here to regularly seek validation from others, & comradery (even though message board friendships are altogether non-tangible) .... The question was meant to stimulate an idea-symposium .... Clearly, your mental limitations & disabilities have prevented you from grasping such intellection. ...It might behoove you, at this point, to focus the bulk of your energy on finding a way out of the San Diego ghetto you currently reside in.
