Based on Howard's own description, his parents (especially his mother) have some sort of age-related mental impairment. They didn't know that AGT meant America's Got Talent and she asked Howard if he saw his father go up on stage at the live show - even though Howard was the one who invited him on stage and stood next to him the entire time. I can't imagine how they could understand the plot of a movie, there's going to be a lot of uncomfortable silence.
