Also, stopping inner city handgun crime would actually have an effect on violent crime... But well ban assault weapons and act surprised that another newton happens.
Less than 400 people were killed by rifles last year. In the entire US. And that includes all types of rifles, including so called "assault weapons" like AR15, AK47s, FALs, etc. That number also includes suicides and fatal shooting at the hands of law enforcement officers.

And then, in Chicago alone, 500 were killed. Almost all of them killedr were killed by somebody using a handgun...and that's the same for cities around the nation.

This push to ban "assault weapons" is the biggest joke I've seen in years. Well, up until the Time Warner "semi-auto" ad ban, that is.

“We no longer accept ads showing semi-automatic weapons and guns pointed at people. We stand by this policy. If it’s essential to a business owner to show this kind of imagery in their commercials, there are other advertising options in the marketplace.”

because we at Time-Warner believe it is better for little children to watch cartoons about humanistic animals blowing each other up with dynamite than to see Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger holding a gun. We have to draw a line at the types of violence we present to our children viewers: the road runner and coyote blowing each other up with explosives is good, but the terminator is bad. pinky and the brain planning to take over the world is good, but guns are bad. listening to Ice T advocating killing cops in his music is bad, but watching Ice T playing a cop and shooting street hoods is good.

The Canadians are heavily armed, yet have a low murder rate.

Surprised that guys like Peirs Morgan and Alex Jones haven't used that fact.

Oh no. It's all England this and England that.

    Really? That many?? That's crazy.

For years I just kind of accepted that the idea that we're an exceptionally violent nation...not just gun violence, but violence in general. It wasn't until that asshat Piers Morgan opened up his big mouth and then the statistics started pouring in. It's interesting to see I was completely wrong.

Didn't Canada just do away with its long gun registry? And they have no restrictions on Short Barreled Rifles.

Get a shotgun for home protection.

This gun grab isn't about protecting the people.

Frankly, they couldn't care less if we hacked each other to tiny little pieces. They might even encourage it.

I don't know much about it. I just did a search for statistics and found out the gun-murder rate in Canada is 1-point-something while the gun-murder rate in the US is 3-point-something.

there's a column in the NYT (again) today calling for treating violence as a disease. how many times do we have to go through this stupid dead end before the press stops acting as though it is involuntary?

The new policy only applies to advertisements shown on the cable system, not the content of movies and television shows themselves. But it could still have a major impact on the entertainment industry. TV commercials for movies, such as the spot below for the upcoming Warner Bros. release Bullet To The Head, would likely not be able to run on Time Warner Cable, despite the fact that they once shared a parent company.
How the fuck is The Walking Dead supposed to create a t.v. commercial without showing a zombie, getting its head blown off?

    You're right about that.

And to stay sort of on topic, I also like shotguns best for home defense.

Will they ban ads for hammers... I wonder.

But they'll never ban the ads for real killers:

In case Time Warner missed this other gun related news item over the weekend:

Gunning for no change: Thousands of armed protestors gather at state capitols in pro-assault rifle rallies across the country

    • 'Guns Across America' rallies held days after President Barack Obama unveiled a sweeping package of gun-control proposals
    • Mass turnout includes thousands in New York and hundreds in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Texas
    • Minnesota state Rep. Tony Cornish said he would push to allow 21-year-olds to carry guns on college campus
