That's actually American, secular law that was influenced by fundamentalist wackjobs about 400 years ago. Go to southern Europe; I went to Italy on vacation a few years ago, and it was great. I took the Vatican tour and then drank really good Belgian beer while smoking a cigarette at an outdoor table in Rome. The pope couldn't care less, it's the Jerry Falwell's of the world that keep these laws around.
