I've been going to the same guy for @15 years now. I drop my car off in the morning before work, he changes the oil and inspects it from stem to stern. Sometimes he finds things that need repairs, sometimes not. The extra $10 is peace of mind.

A woman I work with went to Jiffy Lube a couple of years ago. They didn't put the new filter on tight enough, and it fell off a couple of miles down the road. Hilarity ensued.

The risk is the same, IMO, at lots of dealers/shops so just find a place highly recommended and stick with 'em.

I'm an asshole that still does most everything myself because that way I know it's done right.
The only time I ever tried working on my own car I replaced the distributor and then twisted the cap around on accident and fucked my car up. After that debacle I leave it to the pros.

I have also heard horror stories about quick lube places. I pay a little more to go to my local mechanic/gas station. I know the guys there and they have never screwed me over and do a good job. Small businesses depend on repeat customers so they are more likely to try to do everything to make you come back.

I think you got off lucky. Most people leave there needing a coolant flush, block alignment and break pads.

I never heard of your car "needing" synthetic

very informative. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I usually get it done on a Saturday out running errands. I may stop now.

My Corvette Owners-manual stated that if Synthetic Oil wasn't used (as they recommended), it could void the warranty

My car recommends that you use Synthetic Oil and the dealer uses synthetic oil when doing the free oil service.
