Doing a little math on Private Parts reveals what a financial flop it really was even though it covered it's production expenses. The total worldwide gross was $40 million. Howard was at the height of his radio popularity at the point of its release with somewhere around 17-18 million listeners. At an average price then of $6-$7 a ticket, around 6 million tickets were sold. So a number equivalent to about 1 out of 3 of his listeners went to see the film. Just like AGT he promised big numbers and they didn't happen, that's the main reason he's never been offered another role in a movie.

Speaking of being naive, I totally believed Howard's bullshit that it was the highest testing movie of all time, that people who actually saw it before release thinking it was the funniest movie in history and that he had the acting skills of DeNiro. What a load of shit he was spewing.

I saw private parts about 2 wks after it came out in MANHATTAN, Howard's home turf....there were probably 15 people in a Thursday or Friday (can't remember) night showing...I remember feeling a bit sad for Howard, but still knowing he was going to spin it..

The movie was entertaining. Some good laughs. But very much a commerical disappointment. After all Howie's buildup, including having Siskel and Ebert on how many times trying to build up the thing? How the movie tested higher than any other movie in the history of the studio? Sure Howard, sure.
