Throughout the History of The Howard Stern Show have the fans always been vicious?

I mean, are we more vicious today than say 2000?

as one of the early members of sfn (oct 2000) I can tell you that some fans have ALWAYS been vicious and horrible. Back then the big debate was jackie - was he a hack or the best funny thing in the universe. And people would attack others with verbal guns and knives like you wouldn't believe.

People also pointed out to HPE (who was online even back then) that he was taking advantage of people - and that was even before many of his crimes were discovered. In those days mods did not stop people from saying whatever they wanted to.

Lots of people just couldn't take it and left. You really have to have a thick skin...esp in those days.
