First Antibiotic-Resistant Gonorrhea Cases Detected in North America

Gonorrhea infects close to 700,000 Americans each year.



The fears of major health organizations have come true: Gonorrhea that is immune to the last remaining effective oral antibiotic has been detected in at least nine North American patients, meaning the era of "incurable" gonorrhea could be close.

Man, this is a great fucking point. Even in the US, antibiotics are used extensively, but at least you theoretically need a scrip.

using all these anti-bacterial soaps is horrible too. All they are going to do is make resistant new strains that won't be affected by these agents that work now. That soap will ooze into the water table and make our drinking water unsafe as new strains of bacteria become resistant. You either need 100% kill rate or no interaction with the killing agent. Killing only some of the bacteria will allow the resistant bacteria to reproduce and infect the water supply with no known killing agent to use on them.

I get into at least two "arguments" a week with patient who demand I give them antibiotics, a lot of times "just in case"

no kidding. We always let the kids fight off anything that didn't cause a fever over 101. If Tylenol or any of the other anti-pyretics would knock the fever down then their own immune system would usually kick in and kill the bug off. Our pedi's weren't big on pushing antibiotics.
