Speaking as someone more or less "from the left," the hysteria around the spate of mass shootings we've had has less to do with guns and gun control and more to do with the abysmal state our mental health care is in this country.

Until we take seriously the problem we have with the millions of mentally ill, undiagnosed, unmedicated/untreated, we will continue to see events like these.

100% correct. It's easier for the government to take away things so that's what they go after. Here in Illinois our asshole Governor shut down about 6 major mental health facilities where a lot of people lived and worked. Those mentally ill and mentally challenged people are now homeless or their families are burdened with the task of taking care of them. I don't mind my taxes paying for something like that because those people cannot help themselves.

A lot of police departments also want a ban on guns. It's about power. If the left and the police take away your right to bear arms they have all the power and can do whatever they want. That's a worst case scenario of course but things are trending that way. They should study the triggers to abhorrent behavior and develop strategies to help and diagnose mentally ill people instead of a knee-jerk reaction to take away the guns. Chicago has one of if not the strictest gun laws in the country but the murder rate is sky high.
