On an unrelated topic, my Mom asked me to be her executor. I "googled" it and it sounds like a big pain in the ass. Your thoughts?

it depends on the size of her estate. The executor is charged with gathering the assets, paying the bills and distributing the net proceeds to the named heirs. If she has a good attorney then the paperwork isn't that difficult. It only gets hairy if she has tons of crap to sort through and get rid of.

I had an estate recently where the woman left everything she owned to people. Shit like yarn, and pillows She also had tons of clothes she wanted to go to Goodwill, along with a lot of money. Her brother was the executor, and he did a ton of work including getting her house sold, he was entitled to a fee, but chose not to take one.

Have a frank conversation with her, tell her that you will do it, but she has to keep the will simple (no leaving nick knacks), and to get rid of things now that she doesn't use

Might I add that having everyone understand what the disposition of the assets is to be and that any family heirlooms are spelled out where they go. We did this in our family. Everyone knows and has already agreed to what happens.

Added: This was done by brothers & sisters only. No wives or husbands were involved.

She's kind of a hoarder and I know she hasn't paid her taxes since 2008. Sounds like a nightmare based on that alone.

    That's the short version.
